When the lights go down...

Here you will find most of the movies that Johnny Depp has been in.  I will probably not list movies that he just made short appearances in. By clicking on the picture of a movie, you will be taken to a site where you can buy it.

A Nightmare on Elm Street
(1984, character: Glen Lantz, director: Wes Craven, Rated: R)

nightmare.jpg

In the dreams of his victims, a specteral child murderer stalks the children of the members of the lynch mob that killed him.  Everyone who's seen the movie will remember the scene where Johnny Depp (in this, his first ever starring role) gets liquidised by his own bed and spewed upwards in a massive fountain of blood that soaks the entire room.

Private Resort
(1985, character: Jack, director: George Bowers, Rated: R)

resort.jpg

This is the story of two teenage boys who are guests at a Florida resort for the weekend. Their only interest is, of course, chasing girls, but fate has much more in store for them. It should be noted to any fan of the Depp that he shows his naked backside in this movie.

linerainbow.gif

Platoon
(1986, character: Pvt. Gator Lerner, director: Oliver Stone, Rated: R)

platoon.jpg

A young recruit in Vietnam faces a moral crisis when confronted with the horrors of war and the duality of man. Johnny Depp should have gone down in history for his role in this film.

linerainbow.gif

Cry Baby
(1990, character: Wade "cry-baby" Walker, director: John Waters, Rated: PG-13)

crybaby.jpg

"Cry-Baby," shares aspects of its plot with "Grease." Allison is a "square" good girl who has decided she wants to be bad and falls hard for Cry-Baby Walker, a Greaser.  Spoofing Elvis movies and Juvenile Delinquency scare films of the '50s, this movie follows the adventures of Cry-Baby who, though he is sent to juvie, is determined to cross class (and taste) boundaries to get Allison back.  A spoof type film that you can not take seriously, just sigh at the romantic/cheesey love scenes with Johnny.

linerainbow.gif

Edward Scissorhands
(1990, character: Edward Scissorhands, director: Tim Burton, Rated: PG-13)

edwardiso.jpg

An artificial man with scissors for hands lives completely alone until a local woman befriends him and brings him home.  Johnny gives an amazing performance as a gentle, but hot tempered Edward.  Johnny fell in love with Winona Ryder during the making of this film.  They became engaged, but later broke up.  His infamous tattoo "Winona Forever" on his arm, has since read "Wino Forever".

linerainbow.gif

Arizona Dream
(1993, character: Axel Blackmar, director: Emir Kusturica, Rated: R)

arizona.jpg

Axel tags fish in New York as a naturalist's gofer. He's happy there, but a messenger arrives to bring him to Arizona for his uncle's wedding. It's a ruse to get Axel into the family business. In Arizona, Axel meets two odd women: vivacious, needy, and plagued by neuroses and familial discord. He gets romantically involved with one, while the other, rich but depressed, plays accordion tunes to a gaggle of pet turtles. A different, but very good movie.

linerainbow.gif

Benny & Joon
(1993, character: Sam, director:Jeremiah S. Chechik, Rated: PG)

cap015.jpg

A mentally ill young woman finds her love in an eccentric man who models himself after Buster Keaton.  Johnny gives a real oscar worthy performance in his role as Sam (an illiterate genius). Sam has different ways of looking at life and not caring what others think about him. Johnny will make you smile and laugh out loud.  This is a must see for everyone!

linerainbow.gif

What's Eating Gilbert Grape?
(1993, character: Gilbert Grape, director: Lasse Hallstrom, Rated: PG-13)

gilbert012.jpg

Gilbert has to care for his brother Arnie and his obese mother, which gets in the way when love walks into his life.  Johnny plays a great character who has to put everyone before himself.  A great movie to make you feel better about your life.

linerainbow.gif

Ed Wood
(1994, character: Ed Wood, director: Tim Burton, Rated: R)

edwood.jpg

A biopic of the life and work of the legendary 'worst director of all time', Edward D.Wood, Jr., concentrating on the best-known period of his life in the 1950s and focusing on both his transvestism and his touching friendship with the once great but now ageing and unemployed horror star Bela Lugosi.  This is a love it or hate it movie.

linerainbow.gif

Don Juan DeMarco
(1995, character: Don Juan, director: Jeremy Leven, Rated: PG-13)

don.jpg

A well-respected psychiatrist has a run-in with a young man who thinks he is Don Juan--or is he really? The Don Juan becomes his patient, and as the days pass, the psychiatrist starts to see that perhaps just because each person has his/her own reality doesn't mean they're crazy.  Johnny as a Latin Lover, it could not get better.

linerainbow.gif

Dead Man
(1995, character: William Blake, director: Jim Jarmusch, Rated: R)

deadman.jpg

The story of a young man's journey, both physically and spiritually, into very unfamiliar terrain. William Blake travels to the extreme western frontiers of America sometime in the 2nd half of the 19th century. Lost and badly wounded, he encounters a very odd, outcast Native American, named "Nobody," who believes Blake is actually the dead English poet of the same name.  Once again Johnny gives a masterfull performance.

linerainbow.gif

Nick of Time
(1995, character: Gene Watson, director: John Badham, Rated: R)

nick134.jpg

Gene Watson arrives home in Los Angeles, after attending his ex-wife's funeral, with his daughter. Soon, his daughter is kidnapped.  Starring with Christopher Walken, Johnny delivers an amazing performance, in this non-stop action/drama movie.

linerainbow.gif

Donnie Brasco
(1997, character: Donnie Brasco, director: Mike Newell, Rated: R)

donniedvd107.jpg

An FBI undercover agent infilitrates the mob and finds himself identifying more with the mafia life to the expense of his regular one.  All though some would call this movie drawn out, it is well worth seeing for the on screen chemistry between Johnny and Al Pacino. With Al being a regular to the mobster scene, is a mentor to Depp.

linerainbow.gif

The Brave
(1997, character: Raphael, director: Johnny Depp, Rated: Not Released in the USA)

brave2251.jpg

An unemployed alcoholic Native American Indian lives in a trailer park with his wife and two children. Convinced that he has nothing to offer this world, he agrees to be tortured to death by a gang of rednecks in a movie for $50,000 to go to his family. This was Johnny's only attempt at directing to date, but with this movie as proof, that he should do more.  Johnny has always been in touch with his native american side (hes half native american, half Irish in real life), he really brings it out in this film.  The American critics at a film festival downed this movie so much, that Johnny has refused to release it in the USA.

linerainbow.gif

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
(1998, character: Raoul Duke/Hunter S. Thompson, director: Terry Gilliam, Rated: R)

fearandloathing018.jpg

An oddball journalist and his psychopathic lawyer travel to Las Vegas for a series of psychadelic escapades. This movie is certainly twisted, and that is mainly the point.  It is based on Hunter S. Thompson's book.  When he died on 2005, Johnny paid for most of his funeral, that included his ashes being blown up in a firework display, which is how Hunter had told Depp that he wanted to go.

linerainbow.gif

The Astronaut's Wife
(1999, character: Spencer Armacost, director: Rand Ravich, Rated: R)

astrowife030.jpg

Astronaut Spencer Armacoust was on a mission when he suddenly lost contact. When he got home, to friends he was the same, but to his wife he was different. She becomes pregnant, but as time progresses she begins to feel like the lives inside of her are not of this world.  A mix between "Rosemary's Baby" and "the Devil's Advocate", this is an interesting movie, though it doesn't hold much action.

linerainbow.gif

The Ninth Gate
(1999, character: Dean Corso, director: Roman Polanski, Rated: R)

ninthgate.jpg

A rare book dealer seeks out the last two copies of a demon text draw him into the middle of conspiracy with supernatural overtones.  This movie really has it's dark moments as well as uplifting ones. This isn't an action movie, sometimes it's kinda slow, but that's part of it's charm.  This was also the movie that Johnny met his long time girlfriend Vanessa Paradis.  He saw her from the back at a hotel where filming was taking place, he said that it was love at first sight. Vanessa became pregnant just after a few months of them dating.  But it did not matter, because Johnny knew it was forever.  Now Vanessa and Johnny have 2 children together, but are not legally married, and probably won't be, according to him.

linerainbow.gif

Sleepy Hollow
(1999, character: Constable Ichabod Crane, director: Tim Burton, Rated: R)

sleeyhollow.jpg

Constable Icabod Crane is sent to an isolated village to investigate a series of murders reportedly commited by a headless horseman.  Johnny Depp offers an Oscar worthy performance as Ichabod Crane. He brings the squeamish role to life effortlessly with striking details and perfect form.  He decided to do the character rather feminine.  This was his second film co-starring with Christina Ricci.

linerainbow.gif

The Man Who Cried
(2000, character: Cesar, director: Sally Potter, Rated: R)

manwhocried049.jpg

A Russian peasant emigrates to America, with a promise to send for his mother and young daughter when he is settled. His daughter follows shortly after, but she ends up on a ship bound for England, where she is renamed Suzie and raised by a British family. Many years later, Suzie's talent for singing and dancing sees her accepted into a Paris dance troupe where she falls in love with Cesar, a handsome brooding gypsy.  Johnny Depp's melancholy presence and Ricci's other-worldliness accompany the audience through a dreamlike journey

linerainbow.gif

Chocolat
(2000, character: Roux, director: Lasse Hollstrom, Rated: PG-13)

chocolat.jpg

A woman and her daughter open a chocolate shop in a small French village that shakes up the rigid morality of the community.  Johnny plays a captain of a "river-rat" boat.  He is hotter than hot in this film, very charming and sexy.  Once again we find him as a character that is different and doesn't care what others think.  This is the perfect film for a "girls movie night in", just be sure to have a lot of chocolate available before watching, or you will be hitting pause and running to 7-11 without a doubt.

linerainbow.gif

Blow
(2001, character: George Jung, director: Ted Demme, Rated: R)

blow.jpg

The story of George Jung, the man who established the American cocaine market in the 1970's. An amazing film that really makes you think about how you should spend your life.  This film follows George Jung's life from childhood to the present, who during the late 70's brought in about 85% of the cocaine in America.  Johnny once again gives an amazing performance, along side Penelope Cruz.  This movie will make you cry and shiver about your own life.

linerainbow.gif

From Hell
(2001, character: Inspector Fred Abberline, director: Albert & Allen Hughes, Rated: R)

hell.jpg

In Victorian Era London, a troubled clairvoyant, opium addicted police detective investigates the murders by Jack The Ripper.  Johnny Depp is perfect as the troubled Abberline, though the real Abberline didn't do opium. One of the hottest scenes of the film is Depp in a tub doing the drug, so most fans aren't upset that it was added.  This is a gore film, so if you have a weak stomach, do not watch it.

linerainbow.gif

Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl
(2003, character: Captain Jack Sparrow, director: Gore Verbinski, Rated: PG-13)

cap001.jpg

Pirate Jack Sparrow sets out to save a governor's daughter from fellow pirates, with the hopes that it will give him the opportunity to regain the ship that was stolen from him.  If you havn't seen this movie yet, then you are living on mars!  This movie turned Depp into a real Blockbuster actor. Most teenage girls went to see this movie because of Orlando Bloom, but afterwards they were like Orlando who?  Johnny really stole the show and made this movie what it is.  His character was spectacular and he based it off of the cartoon Peppy la Pew and Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones.  Everyone is awaiting the sequel and the third allready being filmed in late 2005.

linerainbow.gif

Once Upon A Time In Mexico
(2003, character: Sands, director: Robert Rodriguez, Rated: R)

ouatimdvd051.jpg

Hitman "El Mariachi" becomes involved in international espionage involving a psychotic CIA agent and a corrupt Mexican general.  Depp is fun to watch as a sure-of-himself rogue CIA agent who shows up in a million different disguises.  Casting Depp as Agent Sands was the best thing for this movie.

linerainbow.gif

Secret Window
(2004, character: Mort Rainey, director: David Koepp, Rated: PG-13)

swdvd230.jpg

A writer is accused for plagiarism by a strange man, who then starts haunting him for "justice."  Johnny Depp once again shines in his role and keeps the viewer very interested.  About 70% of the film is Depp on a couch with bad hair and a ripped robe.  But like most Depp fans would say, "I would stand in line for a movie if it was Johnny watching paint dry".  When it comes to Stephen King movies, they are either a hit or a flop, Depp made this one a hit.  With a very twisted ending and an on the edge of your seat mentality, this film is a must see for mystery and Depp lovers alike.

linerainbow.gif

Finding Neverland
(2004, character: Sir James Matthew Barrie, director: Marc Forster, Rated: PG)

findingneverland.jpg

The story of J.M. Barrie's friendship with a family who inspired him to create Peter Pan.  Finding Neverland is such a movie. Every minute of this movie was simply incredible -- I felt like the kids in the theater on the opening night of Peter Pan. Johnny Depp is absolutely astounding, as he usually is, as JM Barrie.  This movie really makes you feel like a kid again, never never land truly does come to life with Indians, Mermaids, and Fairys, minus Michael Jackson.  If you have a heart you will cry and smile.  This movie is a must see for all ages and genders.

linerainbow.gif

Charlie & The Chocolate Factory
(2005, character: Willy Wonka, director: Tim Burton, Rated: PG)

40.jpg

A young boy wins a tour through the most magnificent chocolate factory in the world, led by the world's most unusual candy maker.  Depp gives an amazing performance as Willy Wonka, in many ways out doing the original.  Once again, Depp delivers a character that makes you feel like a kid again.  You can't help laughing out loud at his superb sarcasm and antics.  Personally, I saw this movie 3 times in its opening weekend.  Playing Charlie in this film is young Freddie Highmore, who Depp sudgested to Burton as being the perfect part, Highmore had played Peter with Depp in Finding Neverland.  Oddly enough, Freddie and Johnny share a birthday on June 9th, and this kid must have something if Johnny is noticing him.

linerainbow.gif

Corpse Bride
(2005, character: Victor Van Dort, director: Tim Burton, Rated: PG)

corpsebridetr004.jpg

A man, after butchering his lines at his wedding rehearsal, is sent into the woods to practice his vows. He preforms his vows perfectly and places the ring on a twig on the ground. It turns out the twig was really the hand of the Corpse Bride, who now claims she is his legal wife.  At first you are unsure if it is really Depp's voice, because the character is rather wimpy.  This is a musical, but unfortunately Johnny does not sing.  Other than that, it is a pretty good movie, with a great ending.  I went with a big group of friends to see it opening night and none of us were dissapointed, even my friend Ashley who we had to drag to it, said she really liked it afterwards.  Depp did the recording for the movie in the middle of filming Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.  If you are a fan of "The Nightmare Before Christmas", you will love this movie.

linerainbow.gif

The Libertine
(2006, character: John Wilmot, director: Laurence Dunmore, Rated: R)

libteaser025.jpg

He didn't resist temptation. He pursued it. The story of John Wilmot (Depp), a.k.a. the Earl of Rochester, a 17th century poet who famously drank and debauched his way to an early grave, only to earn posthumous critical acclaim for his life's work.  This movie was released art-house in 2004, it finally hit mainstream in 2006.  This movie is not for the faint-hearted or easily offended. It's mid-17th century England at it's grubbiest, filthiest and most depraved. There is foul language, plenty of nudity and phallic symbols are used liberally throughout this film, although Rochester is always fully clothed. But it is a definite for any fan of true artistic talent.

linerainbow.gif

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
(2006, character: Captain Jack Sparrow, director: Gore Verbinski, Rated: PG-13)

003.jpg

Once again thrown into the world of the supernatural, Captain Jack Sparrow finds out that he owes a blood debt to the legendary Davey Jones, Captain of the ghostly Flying Dutchman. With time running out, Jack must find a way out of his debt or else be doomed to eternal damnation and servitude in the afterlife.  This film made $132 million opening weekend, that is more money then any other movie in history! A must see, this movie steps everything up a notch from the first and includes a very big cliff hanger ending that we all must wait a year for to find out what happens.
